Web based email client with collaboration & business apps

zoho2In the age of virtualization and mobility, I found myself struggling to maintain synchronized email, contacts lists and document sharing capabilities. After giving up on maintaining a backup of outlook .pst and thunderbird files, I migrated to gmail. I love gmail, it’s great — don’t get me wrong. I found that I felt a feeling of always having a “messy desk” per se, due to gmail’s “labeling” instead of “folders”. Well, after about a month of researching various hosted solutions including zimbra and axigen, I stumbled upon zoho via box.net believe it or not! I had been testing out various web based file sharing and viewing apps to check out what features they offered. I was pleased to find an app that allowed me to organize mail in a folder hierarchy and also could tie to multiple pop accounts — all for free!

Productivity & Collaboration AppsZoho offers a slew of extensive free tools for collaboration and also several business apps that tie into the zoho business suite. The business suite allows up to 10 users for free, and each user can enable pop email accounts under their user account. Each of those accounts allow you to send as the actual email name. As you can see here, there is a plethora of tools for productivity packed in one little url at zoho.com. You can also customize your own business portal url with the free version, like yourbizname.business.zoho.com.

  1. Good Post Su!

    You are an excellent writer!

  2. Thanks Lisa. I really love zoho. It has it’s quirks, but is definitely nice for keeping some things up on the cloud.

Also, it has a feature that you may find useful. “Zoho Meeting” allows 5 free 2 hour java based remote desktop sessions per month. This is a great way to easily do remote desktop support without configuring things on the client side. Because it’s java, one could administer a windows desktop pretty quick n’ easy from the lin side.
