Fostering Your Child’s Inner Geek – Week 2

By Su | Published April 3rd, 2010

After writing my last post about fostering your child’s inner geek, I developed a brainstorm to fix up an old laptop of mine and give it to my son’s friend Elijah.  The hinges on it were cracked, and I had dreams for it to become a xubuntu steampunk laptop. Well, after some serious thought, I realized that I didn’t have the wherewithal to make a steampunk laptop, so off I went to Ebay to find an old Dell 5000e shell, which arrived in the mail two days ago.  I eagerly unpacked the laptop carcass and went to work with my teensy little screw driver.  The screen housing was carefully taken apart and replaced along with a new keyboard to boot.  This model of Dell is very prone to cracked hinges. Even the replacement has hairline cracks on each side. It has an operational battery that holds a charge though — bonus!

Fostering Your Child’s Inner Geek

Most of the times that I have discussed anything “techie” related with friends and family they get a sort of glazed over look on their face as if I am speaking another language.  Not too long ago, I got a little surprise from a friend’s kid who was visiting with my son for a few days.  During his stay with us, I couldn’t help but notice his curiosity for computers.  Instead of getting that glazed over look, his eyes were wide with excitement.  I showed him a how a few of the programs operated and gave him  a little tour of my desktop, until my son finally ended up diverting his attention with a “Mommmm”. My son Jasper was quite annoyed that I was consuming his friend Elijah’s attention with such things.

How did you become a geek?
